A good home decoration can give an entirely new look to one’s home. These days, people often employ professional home decorators to give that unique look to the interiors of their homes. Let us have a look at some of the intricacies of this emerging field.

Interior decoration is the art of decorating a room so that it becomes attractive and functions well within the existing architecture of the house. Although, the terms home decor and interior designing are often used interchangeably, they in fact show a distinct difference in their scopes. Home decor typically focuses on the appropriate selection and presentation of the house’s interior items like furniture, accessories and room layout. On the other hand, interior designing involves the manipulation of the architectural integrity of the interior space of a house.

The first professional interior decorators were probably employed in Western Europe during 1720s. William Kent is often cited as the first person who took charge of the interior decoration of an entire building. In London, the work of home decorators was earlier done by the upholsterers while the same job was done by merchand-mercier or “Merchant of Goods” in Paris during early nineteenth century.
Syrie Maugham, Dorothy Draper and Sybil Colefax are among the prominent eighteenth century interior home decorators. The two prominent London based modern interior home decorators are Lenygon and Morant. The present day home decor themes do not belong to a specific period or style. The job of interior designers have become more specialised over a period of time. The modern interior designers choose floor plans, light fixtures and wall paintings for the houses.
The goal of home decor is to provide a certain “feel” to the home. These days, many people take the services of professionally certified interior decorators (C.I.D.) to give a all new look and feel to their homes. The home decoration has become a popular television subject in the UK. Changing Rooms (BBC) and Selling Houses (Channel 4) are the two most popular home decoration programs that have widely been appreciated by the Britishers.

The home decorating industry is thriving and largely successful as more people are doing their own interior design projects. Home makeover television shows have been immensely popular and have mass appeal to the average home enthusiasts. People are gaining confidence that they can create the design look they want by trying some of the home decorating ideas they see on television, online and in interior design magazines.

One factor that can detract from room enhancement efforts is a room filled with piles of papers, books, clothes and furniture, which all amount to clutter. One of the simplest ways to redecorate is to de-clutter the space to open it up to the possibilities of change. This is something the whole family can work together to do and will yield beneficial results for everyone, as items are cleaned out and wanted items are neatly arranged and stored.

The idea of decorating rooms in the home can seem intimidating at first, because deciding where to begin can often be as difficult as the task at hand. Once the decision is made as to the type of project, costs involved and accessories to buy, it is easier to get started. It is also good to look at magazines or websites to get helpful decorating tips on styles and coordinated accessories to consider. Dressing up a room is a lot like putting together a nice outfit for a special occasion–all of the components work together for a fresh, new look.

One of the simplest things people can do to fix up their home is to splash on a fresh coat of paint. Many home improvement stores have very knowledgeable staff concerning color schemes and types of paint that would be best to use. In addition, some stores sell tutorial CDs that give step-by-step directions on the basics of painting. Paint stores can also provide helpful information about the most suitable type of paint and colors to consider for your living space.

Collecting antique furniture is considered as one of the most expensive hobbies that people can get into because of the high price tags. Given this, it is then important for antique collectors to take the necessary steps that can help them maintain and protect their investments. Among these steps, some of the most important include knowing how to clean and handle antique furniture. However, knowing how to clean and handle antique furniture is not only limited to gaining information on the steps collectors can take to keep their furniture dirt or scratch free. This is because it also involves understanding the factors that cause damage to antique furniture and understanding how they can avoid making their antique furniture vulnerable to damage.

There are a number of risk factors that can cause damage to antique furniture, and collectors need to know about them so they can take the necessary precautions to help them avoid the damage these factors can bring to their collections. One of these includes fluctuations in relative humidity, which means that antique furniture is constantly exposed to changes in weather and temperatures. This can be dangerous for antique furniture because the constant expansion and shrinking of antique furniture as a result of temperature changes can cause cracking and splitting. To prevent such damage, collectors can use a humidifier or they should try to maintain a constant room temperature where they place their collections.

What other room (besides your kitchen and livvingroom) do you use as much as your bathroom? A bathroom is a great place to really make your own, whether as a showcase for a great antique vanity mirror, to a handcrafted artisan glass sink, to a spa-like retreat – or even just a fun place for the kids’ bath time. The choice is yours!

Let’s ask yourself two basic questions: 1) what would you like to do, and 2) how much would you like to spend to do it?

Some older homes’ bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side – so you may want to earmark extra cash for any plumbing upgrades within the wall, or possibly expanding the footprint of the room itself. On the plus side, if everything looks ok structurally speaking in your older home’s bath, you can focus on just re-decorating, which will be significantly easier – and less costly.

If you’re in a newer home, you may be in luck- most of the modern plumbing upgrades were probably built in. Now you can start to have fun making the bathroom your own. So let’s get down to business.

Financial Plan:

Less than $300 On a shoestring? Not to worry – you may be a little more limited, but remember – a smaller upgrade can make a big difference. Consider a quick new coat of paint in a new color scheme, brand new hardware (like towel racks, soap dishes, drawer pulls – even a new doorknob)…these little changes can make your bath feel brand new.

$300 – $600 If you can afford to spend a bit more cash, think about the suggestions above, and consider some additional upgrades like a new shower curtain, hotel quality bath & hand towels, a cozy rug, even a new mirror or medicine chest. To top it off, look into new light fixtures to show off all your efforts.

$600 and Up When you’re committed to making a change. At this stage, look into options for bigger-ticket upgrades: a spa tub, furniture-quality vanities, artisan glass or fired clay sinks, and designer toilets and faucets. If you’re handy, you can take some of the punch out of the bottom line by doing some work yourself – such as replacing sink or bath faucets – but the larger-scale work will need to be done by a professional. Typically, this is where the bulk of your costs will fall

Other Options:

Rather than doing a full demolition, you can also look into some cost-saving alternatives such as tub re-glazing (about $500) and re-grouting or re-tiling bathroom walls. The work typically takes only a few days (as opposed to weeks) and can make an immediate change for a fraction of the cost of a full remodeling.

Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the look you want. Check out your local home center and independent bathroom showcase stores. Another great place for inspiration is online. You’ll get a better idea of what you’re looking for, and you might be able to find a bargain at the same time!

Many people like to buy antique furniture, including antique chairs, because of the blend of style and history. Antiques have a story to tell about the people who owned them and how they were used, even if you have to imagine what that exact story is. Whether you buy antiques because of their style, as an investment, to preserve a piece of history, or for sentimental reasons, beginners should educate themselves about the pieces and the time period they come from.

One of the biggest issues for beginning antique buyers is that it can be hard to know when you’re getting the real thing and when you’ve come across a reproduction or imitation piece. In addition, pieces that have been fixed or changed in some way can have a reduced value if the fix wasn’t done correctly or if the piece wasn’t restored properly.

Beginners should try to learn as much as they can about particular areas of antiques. If you are interested in antique chairs, do as much research as you can about the period or style that you’re interested in. It’s often easier to start with one particular item and increase your knowledge from there. Study how the antique chair was made, what materials were used, and so on. In addition, research the issues that individuals can run into in buying the particular style or chair so that you’ll have a better idea of what to watch out for.

Sometimes you can find a class or workshop covering the antique chair period that you like which will help you learn not only about its construction but also its history. Check with local universities, community centers, or larger auction houses to see if they offer any classes on the topic. Buy a few books on the topic and read online sites as well. The more knowledge you gain, the better able you’ll be to buy good pieces.

Hands on looking will greatly improve your skills at spotting the real deal. If you know of an expert in the area, have them help you. Otherwise, try to find a good dealer or restorer that knows the topic and will work with you. Although books and research are helpful, you’ll need to be able to work with and recognize actual pieces.

If you focus on pieces that you love, you’ll be less frustrated when you find that you’ve paid more for something than it’s worth. Even with the most careful research, sometimes it will happen and you need to be ready for that. Do all you can to ensure that you’re getting an authentic piece, but recognize that sometimes you’ll miss something, particularly as you’re starting out.

Finding antique chairs can be great fun for treasure hunters. When you start out, it’s important to gain as much knowledge about the topic as you can and to practice looking for good pieces. Soon, your hard work will pay off in amazing finds.
